For this week, I tried to find a nonprofit a little bit closer to homecoming and helping survivors.
SAFE Alliance is a merger between Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace. If you want to dig deeper, SafePlace was an amalgamation of the Austin Rape Crisis Center and the Center for Battered Women. They've been around for almost forty years. Now their mission is to, quite simply, stop abuse for everyone.
In addition to serving people who go through any kind of abuse, they provide preventative services regarding abuse - parenting services, abuse prevention for people with disabilities, community education, education for fathers/father figures, promoting healthy teen relationships among a plethora of other services.
To me this work is important because it is the backbone of our society. Relationships are the lens through which we experience our world. Healthy ones can go on to prevent abuse and crime and nourish well-being. Not to mention, as human beings, we should strive to create a healthy environment for the people around us. That is what SAFE is trying to do.
One other thing I really love is that their senior management is comprised solely of women. That's pretty cool.
