The first of its kind, Blue Tin Production is a sewing cooperative that is run by immigrant and refugee women. It was announced just last week by Hoda Katebi, is slated to start production mid March and they are currently crowdfunding $25,000 to buy supplies and materials and get the co-op up and running as soon as possible.
There are three initial members of the co-op - each of whom are highly skilled seamstresses and were selected after a rigorous 2 month process. The co-op gives them the opportunity to manufacture clothing for designers and brands nationally, while simultaneously meeting mental and physical health, legal, social service, child care, transportation, language, and other needs of its members.
In addition to providing jobs, benefits, stability, and giving the members a chance to lead, Blue Tin Productions also plans on holding bimonthly educational classes for the larger refugee and immigrant women population on issues ranging from mental and sexual health to helping their kids apply for college. If that wasn't enough, they will also offer certification based sewing classes to refugees, immigrants, people of color, and other communities-in-need to help them develop skills that can translate into jobs.
